Kifak Enta

"Farewell song - أغنية الوداع"

English:
I now must bid you all farewell, and tell you about me
It's just that, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't be singing
We sang songs (written) on paper
A song for someone who is longing
And like always, in the end
There is an end, and a time for parting
O people, I must tell you this story about me
Everything I say, is what I feel...And it comes from within me
Musicians have played and left, and the crowd started to disperse
And like always, in the end
There is an end, and a time for parting
I will stand with you again, tomorrow
And if not tomorrow, then certainly the day after
Speak to me and I will hear you
Even if the voice is far
Without our music the night is sad
Without a song the night would be long
Every night I'd sing in a city
I'd carry my voice and move forward,
All the time.

Comment:
This is one of the very few songs in which Fairouz talks about the artist she is. I believe the song is self-explanatory, and its meanings are pretty obvious. I therefore refrained from writing two translations, but I tried my best to be faithful to the original lyrics in this one.
Also, I was unfortunately unable to find anything online on the song's circumstances. I feel particularly intrigued by whether or not Fayrouz gave her son a cue onto writing it.
I should also mention that this song has become the finale of many of Fayrouz's concert ever since it came out, more than 20 years ago.

"How are you?

English: (Literal)
Remember the last time I saw you, that year?
Remember the last word I said then?
And I haven't seen you since,
And now I have.
How are you? O, you!
Remember the last night you stayed up late at ours?
Remember? there was a woman who annoyed you
This is my mother, always concerned about me,
Because of you. O,you!
How are you? It seems...they are saying...you now have children
I really thought you were outside of the country!
Let's not talk about the country!
May God bless the children, yeah!
How are you? O, you!
It crosses my mind, (the idea of) getting back together with you
You are my right...get back together with you
Me and you. O, you!
Remember what you told me, that very last time?
"You want to stay, stay. You want to leave, you can"
I got upset at the time, I didn't analyze it, that you...
It is you!
You cross my mind, despite the families, and the people
You are the one, and I love you since the beginning
I love you. O, you!
It is you,
O, you!
I love You!!

English: (Liberal)
Remember the last time I saw you, that year?
Remember the last word I said then?
And I haven't seen you since,
And now I have.
How are you? O, you!
Remember that last soirée at my place?
Remember the woman who annoyed you then?
That's my mother, she was always concerned about me,
Because of you. O,you!
How are you? I heard you have children now
I really thought you were abroad
Your trip does not concern me now!
May God bless the children, yeah!
How are you? O, you!
It crosses my mind, to get back together with you
You're the one for me...get back together with you
Me and you. O, you!
Remember what you told me that last time?
"You decide whether you stay or leave."
I got upset then, I didn't analyze it as to: this is so like you!
You cross my mind, despite my family and your own , and people's opinions/reactions
You are the one, and I loved you since the beginning
I love you. O, you!
It is you,
O, you!
I love You!!

Explanation:
The woman unexpectedly sees her lover years after their separation. This causes her to recall all these moments that they have shared, were they good or bad. She starts asking him all these questions; she got nervous...She has always loved him, and always will.

English:(Literal)
You frequently ask about me, and you love me
I know this talk, I have memorized this talk
All this talk is sweet, and although it is sweet,
Why does my feeling keep telling me:"No
Something is about to happen...Something is happening!"
You frequently pass by me...and you belong to me
I know these stories, I have memorized these stories
All what you have said is sweet, and although it is sweet
Why does my feeling keep telling me:"No...
Something is about to happen...Something is happening!"

English:(Liberal)
You "always check on" me, and you "love" me
I know this discourse, I have memorized it
All this talk is nice, and although it is,
Why does my hunch keep telling me:"No
Something is about to happen...Something is happening!"
You always pass by...and you belong to me*
(I know the gist behind your actions, you have done them many times before)
All what you have said is nice, and although it is,
Why does my hunch keep telling me:"No
Something is about to happen...Something is going on!"

Explanation:
The story is about a woman who cannot prevent herself from having doubts about her relationship with her lover. She feels that there's something wrong despite all the words of comfort that she's been hearing for a long period of time. It is not clear whether she is questioning her lover's fidelity, or if the problem is rather about the fact that this love has just faded with time. Now I took the liberty of placing quotation marks where I imagine the woman quoting her lover and where she's sort of talking to herself (or her hunch).
*This sentence can also mean:"You always pass by...and you do this especially for me". I am leaning towards this translation, I kept the other one above because this translation is more implicit.

English:(literal)
I trust you
I have hope in you
And enough! What do you want more in you?
I have a dream in you
I have a (crazy) passion for you
And enough! Do you want me to die for you?
I swear I will die for you
Believe it, if you can
What do you want with me, if I died for you?
Could there be more?
I have no "more"
Isn't it that all sentences are ending with "You"?!
I trust you, that's enough!
I have loved you, like no one else has loved,
And never will
And you see it as (a) normal (thing)
And not that important
I try to...I don't understand what makes me so attached to you
I write poetry about you
I write prose about you
And enough!
What else can I write about you?
Could there be more?
I have no "more"
Isn't it that all sentences are ending with "You"?!
I trust you, and that's enough!
You talk to me like a young child
And you neglect me a lot
If one day, in the morning
You think about calling me
Tell me, what is it that's making me so attached to you?
I...trust you
I have hope in you
And enough! What do you want more, in you?
I have a dream in you
I am passionate about you
And enough! Do you want me to die for you?
I swear I will die for you
Believe it, if you can
What do you want with me, if I died for you
Could there be more?
I have no "more"
It seems all sentences and talks and discourses are about "You"

English: (Liberal)
I trust you
I have faith in you
And that's enough (sufficient)! What else do you want me to feel for you?
My dreams are of you
I am passionate about you
And that's enough! Do you want me to die for you?
I swear I'm gonna die for you (I am so crazy about you)
Believe it, if you can
Why do you care if I died for you?
Could there be more?
I have no "more"
Isn't it that all sentences are ending with "You"?!
I trust you, and that's enough (sufficient)!
I have loved you like no one else has loved

Could there be more?
I have no "more"
Isn't it that all sentences are ending with "You"?!
I trust you, and that's enough!
You talk to me as if I were a young child
And you are very much taking me for granted
If only, one morning
You think about calling me
Tell me, what is it that makes me so attached to you
I...trust you
I have hope in you
And enough! What else do you want me to feel for you?
My dreams are of you
I am passionate about you
